Online ESL Jobs: Companies that Are Constantly Hiring ESL Teachers
I have been teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) online for almost two years now. I work for three companies and make a full-time income from what I do. Teaching online is a huge passion of mine. I love it because it’s flexible and fun and allows me to teach from wherever I am in the world. I’ve taught from my home in Mexico City, from my aunt and uncle’s place in Ontario, from a porch in Vermont and so many other places. It’s also super nice to be able to make my own schedule. These are just some of the benefits I’ve found from teaching online. I’ve compiled this list of online ESL schools that are almost always hiring by including the three companies I work for. I have also included some companies that I don’t work for and just did some research on. Not all of the pay rates were easy to find but I’ve included links to all the relevant information you need to apply to each company. So, without further ado, here are just a handful of some online ESL jobs and companies that are almost always hiring.

Online ESL Jobs: VIPKid
VIPKid is one of the three companies I work for and I’ve got to say, it’s my favorite. The pay is the absolute best that I’ve found. With VIPKid you teach ESL to children in China. This means you work when Chinese students are home from school or on weekends so pay attention to the time difference. They pay up to $22 USD per hour which is one of the highest pay rates of any of these companies. Each class is 25 minutes long and the sessions are one-on-one meaning you teach one student at a time. All the class materials are prepared for you and you just go through an interactive slide show using props to teach your students.
VIPKid requires you to be legally eligible to work in either Canada or the USA. You also must have a Bachelor’s Degree and a TESOL or TEFL Certificate. VIPKid also prefers that you have one year of teaching experience (this experience doesn’t have to be in teaching English, it can be in teaching anything). To read more about the application process and how to get hired, check out this other article that I wrote. To apply right away, click here and be sure to use my referral code: APRIL0275 .
SayABC is another company that I work for and is actually VIPKid’s ‘sister company’. They also cater to teaching children in China. With SayABC, each class is 45 minutes long and you get paid around $15 USD per 45-minute class. SayABC differs from VIPKid in that you teach anywhere from 2 to 6 students at a time instead of giving one-on-one lessons. Again, all class materials are prepared for you ahead of time and you just help the students go through an interactive slide show using props and correcting grammar and pronunciation.
SayABC also requires you to be legally eligible to work in either Canada or the USA. You need to have a Bachelor’s Degree and a TESOL Certificate and it’s preferable that you have some teaching experience. Recently I also started working for Cambly. Cambly is quite different from VIPKid and SayABC because you tutor adults from all over the world. This means you don’t have to work around China’s hours. The pay is significantly less at just $0.17 USD per minute or $10.20 USD per hour of ‘talk time’. The reason the pay is lower is that your title is ‘Tutor’, not ‘Teacher’ which means YOU DO NOT NEED A BACHELOR’S DEGREE OR A TESOL CERTIFICATE to tutor with Cambly. You also don’t need previous teaching experience. With Cambly, the classes are mostly conversational and you plan your own materials. Cambly has a large library full of exercises that you can pull up to do with your students when you’re talking to them.
At the time of writing this article, Cambly Kids is currently not hiring but you can add yourself to the waitlist by following these instructions on the main Cambly website. With Cambly Kids you teach kids from all over the world so there’s no need to work around another country’s hours. The materials are pre-prepared for you and you just teach what’s on the slides.

Palfish has two sides to their company. Palfish is an application that can be downloaded onto your smartphone or tablet. They have three types of classes that you can teach and therefore three types of teachers who work for them. You can be a General Palfish Teacher (teaching via Free Talk and Live Streaming), a Palfish Official Kids Course Teacher (teaching kids in the Philippines using Palfish prepared class materials), or a Palfish Philippines Course Teacher (only open to Filipino English teachers). For Free Talk and Live Streaming, you can teach people of any age. For the Kids Course, you would only teach kids ages 3 to 12.
To teach the Free Talk and Live Streaming sessions only, you don’t need any previous experience or a TESOL Certification. To teach the Kids Course you do need a TESOL Certification and you must be a native English speaker from either Canada, the USA, the UK, Ireland or Australia. The most money you can make with Palfish is $22 per hour if you teach the Kids Course. For Live Streaming and Free Talk you can choose your own rate. QKids is another online ESL teaching and learning platform with Chinese children as their target audience. Their classes are preplanned for you in advance and are totally interactive. Qkids students are between the ages of 4 and 12. To work for Qkids you must be eligible to work in the USA or Canada. You must have a Bachelor’s Degree or at least be in your last semester of acquiring your Bachelor’s Degree. A TESOL Certificate is not necessary to apply but once you have applied and been hired, you will be required to obtain a TESOL Certificate before you can actually start teaching. You can find out more about teaching with Qkids here and apply for a job here.
Dada is also aimed at teaching English as a Second Language to children in China. The classes are one-on-one with children ages 4 to 16. With DaDa you can teach one-on-one and one-to-many courses meaning sometimes you will just teach one child at a time and sometimes you will teach multiple children. You must have a TESOL or TEFL Certification to work with DaDa and I believe you may need a Bachelor’s Degree as well. For more information and to apply to Dada click here.
GoGoKid is another ESL teaching platform aimed at teaching kids in China. All classes are taught one-on-one, meaning you teach one student at a time. GoGoKid pays anywhere from $14 to $25 per hour. The classes are also preplanned for you which is awesome. GoGoKid, like most of the other Chinese companies, requires you to have a Bachelor’s Degree to teach with them. With GoGoKid, you can be from any country in the world as long as you have a strong internet connection. To find out more and to apply to GoGoKid, click here.
Most companies that cater to teaching kids in China do not provide a stable set of hours. That’s where Whales is different. On their website, they claim that they provide job security through fixed schedules. This means that you teach the same students over and over again. They pay $18 to $26 per 50-minute class taught. With Whales English, you teach up to 3 students at a time in group classes. Students are between the ages of 3 to 18 meaning they also reach an older audience than other Chinese ESL programs. With iTalki you can apply as either a Tutor or a Professional Teacher. To be a Tutor you don’t need a degree or TESOL Certificate but to apply to be a Professional Teacher you need a Bachelor’s Degree, a TESOL Certificate or an equal amount of certificates and experiences. With iTalki you teach adults from all over the world. You prepare your own materials and you can even set your own hourly rate! Obviously Professional Teachers are able to set a higher rate than Tutors, so it’s a good idea to at least get a TESOL Certificate before applying. The cool thing about iTalki is that you can also teach other languages aside from English. So if you’re also fluent in Spanish or French or another language, you can teach that as well. To find out more and apply to iTalki click here.
