11 Online Job Opportunities to Help You Make Money from Anywhere

I have been working exclusively online for over two years now and I absolutely love it! I honestly doubt that I will ever go back to a regular 9-5 job because making money online gives me so much more freedom. Being able to travel whenever I want or stay home and work in my sweatpants is honestly incredible. When I’m feeling sick, I can easily take the day off too. Plus, I never have to ask a boss for time off to go to special family events or holidays. If you’re like me and you crave this kind of freedom, then here are some amazing online job opportunities that you can apply for today!

This post contains affiliate links. Should you decide to purchase something from one of my affiliates I will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. Check out my Disclaimer for more info.

Online ESL Teaching Jobs

Teaching ESL online is how I got my foot into the world of working online. I love teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) for a variety of reasons. First off, it’s a super fun job and you get to interact with people from all over the world! Secondly, I get to make my own schedule. And finally, it pays very well for an online job. If you’re thinking of teaching ESL online I would highly suggest getting a TEFL or TESOL Certificate. You can sign up to take courses and obtain your certificate at a variety of places both online and at different colleges or universities. I got my TESOL Certificate from Arizona State University through Coursera. Coursera is a platform where you can take courses online for a relatively affordable price.

VIPKid & SayABC

The online ESL platforms that tend to pay the most are the ones that offer classes to children in China. This is because Chinese students need to pass difficult exams to get accepted into good high schools so they typically start taking English classes at a young age. You need to remember though, that there will likely be a time difference between where you live and China so you may end up working early in the morning or doing evening hours. Two of the most well known Chinese ESL companies are VIPKid and SayABC. To apply for VIPKid and SayABC you must be legally eligible to work in either Canada or the USA, have a bachelor’s degree (in any field), and a TESOL Certificate and have some teaching experience (teaching experience can include tutoring). VIPKid and SayABC both pay between $15 and $22 USD per hour.

Cambly

If you don’t have a bachelor’s degree, a TESOL Certificate, or much experience teaching you can also apply to be an ESL Tutor with Cambly. Cambly doesn’t pay as well as VIPKid or SayABC (about $10 USD per hour) but you can teach adults as well as children from all over the world. This means you don’t have to work around one country’s hours, but rather you can teach at any time. Most of my students on Cambly are from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Brazil.

Transcription is the act of typing out what people say either in audio recordings or via videos. Transcriptionists usually need a good headset so they can hear what they will be typing. There are lots of different kinds of transcription jobs out there such as medical, legal, and general transcription. You can even get paid to transcribe YouTube videos! Transcriptionists usually earn anywhere from $15 to $30 USD per hour. You can find transcription jobs on Rev, Upwork, and TranscribeMe.

It almost seems like everyone and their cat has a virtual assistant these days. Virtual assistants carry out a variety of tasks for different brands and businesses from the comfort of their own home. Some of these tasks include making phone calls, answering emails, scheduling appointments, and even doing some digital marketing. You can find a variety of virtual assistant jobs on Upwork and Remote Co.

Online Social Media Manager Jobs

Social Media Managers have a pretty cool job if you ask me. I mean, I’m kind of addicted to social media, to say the least… You really need to understand how different social media platforms work in order to become a social media manager. Some social media managers create content for brands across a variety of platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook. Others specialize in one social media platform and offer management services solely for that platform. For example, some social media managers only offer services for Instagram or Pinterest. You can find and apply for social media manager positions on FlexJobs as well as Upwork.

Freelance Writing Jobs

If you want to start freelance writing I highly suggest you start a blog! That’s how I got into freelance writing. Blogging automatically gives you a professional-looking portfolio of your writing samples so you can send it to editors and online magazines that you want to write for. You can also join blogging Facebook groups to find other blogs that you can write guest posts for (most of these are not paid opportunities but will help to build your portfolio). Because of my blog, I’ve made some extra cash writing for Explore Magazine, Environment 911, and Matador Network among others.

If you want to find freelance writing jobs I highly suggest you search for them on job boards such as Problogger. If you’re hoping to do freelance travel writing, then make sure you sign up for Matador Network’s Creator Community. From there you will be able to see a variety of brands searching for writers in their ‘Marketplace’. You can also find out how to write for your favorite publications and online magazines by scrolling to the bottom of their website and searching for a link that says ‘Contributor Guidelines’ or ‘Write for Us’.

Freelance Proofreading & Editing Jobs

If you have a knack for grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure then proofreading or editing could be good options for you. Keep in mind that proofreading and editing are different from each other. Proofreaders generally check spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Editors on the other hand look at the bigger picture and also check sentence structure, clarity of ideas, tone and readability. You can promote your proofreading and editing services by creating a Facebook page or through your website if you have one. Another option is to search for proofreading and editing jobs on Upwork or by working as an academic proofreader or editor with Scribbr.

Freelance Photography Jobs

If you love photography you can make some extra money by selling your photos. There are actually a ton of different ways to do this. One easy way is to sell stock photos for commercial licenses. This means that you would sell photos that brands and websites could buy from you to use in their blog posts or ad campaigns among other things. Two websites where you can sell stock photos are Shutterstock and 500px.

Another option is to start a photography business. While a lot of the work you do wouldn’t just be online, you could set your own hours and enjoy schedule flexibility. I know quite a few people who have started photography businesses. The ones that do well only offer one or two types of photography appointments. For example, wedding and engagement photography, family photo sessions, or product photography.

Freelance Graphic Design Jobs

Most people who do freelance graphic design have at least taken an online course to learn how to do it or have gone to school for it. You can take a variety of Graphic Design courses online through Coursera. Graphic designers do a variety of different jobs such as creating captivating visuals for use in advertisements, brochures, magazines, and social media. You can find Graphic Design jobs on Freelancer and Upwork.

How to Get Paid to Read Books

This is probably one of the coolest jobs on this list. Getting paid to read books is perfect if you’re a bookworm! So how can you get paid to do this? Well, you know how there is usually an audiobook version of the books you love? You can get paid to create audiobooks by reading physical copies out loud! You need to submit an audition to most places in order to get accepted by the author to be the narrator for an audiobook. Once accepted you just need to record your voice while reading (without making mistakes) and get paid! You can get paid to narrate books and find online job opportunities at ACX.

How to Make Money Blogging

There are a variety of ways to make money blogging but be warned, you won’t start making money overnight! The main way that I’ve made money blogging is by using my blog as a portfolio to get freelance writing jobs. Aside from that, I have also made extra cash from affiliates and sponsored posts. Most bloggers also make extra cash by having ads on their website. Below I will explain how you can make money on your blog with affiliates, ads, sponsored posts, and your own products.

Affiliates

Let’s start off with affiliates. Affiliates are companies whose products you help to promote. They are not products you have created which is great because you don’t have to spend time developing something to sell. Basically, you just promote a product or service and then you get paid either when someone clicks on the links you’ve embedded into your site, or when someone makes a purchase. So for example, I am an affiliate for Hotels Combined so when clicks on one of my hotel links, I get a commission. I’m also an affiliate for Get Your Guide, so when someone books a tour through my site, I also get a commission. You can sign up as an affiliate for so many different companies. To find out if one of your brands accepts affiliates, scroll to the bottom of their webpage, and look for a button titled  ‘Affiliates’ or ‘Affiliate Sign Up’. I would also suggest you only promote products you believe in and/or have used yourself.

Ads

You can also make money by putting ads on your website. Usually, people do this by signing up with an ad agency that works with multiple brands. That agency automatically puts ads from different brands onto your website. When people see the ads or click on them, you get a commission. You usually need to have a well-established blog before you can join certain ad agencies though. For example, to be accepted to Monumetric, you need to have at least 10,000 sessions (kind of like website views) per month. To sign up with Mediavine (which is known for paying very well in the industry) you need to have 50,000 sessions or more per month.

Sponsored Posts

You can also make a bit of money by reviewing products or services on your blog. You can view all of the sponsored posts that I have done here. Some people say bloggers just to sponsored posts to get free stuff but in my opinion, if you’re writing a detailed article for a brand, that does not mean you’re getting a product for free. You’re clearly putting in a lot of work to do what you do. After you’ve done a few sponsored posts you can also start charging more money to review different products from different brands. Make sure you don’t just say ‘yes’ to any brand that asks you to do a review though. You need to remember to only promote products and services that you absolutely love, otherwise, your site will start to seem spammy.

Making Money by Selling Your Own Products

Another way bloggers make money is by selling their own products. For example, something I try to promote on my blog are the digital travel planners I sell on my Etsy shop. I will talk more about Etsy in the next section of this article, but just so you know, my Etsy shop is called Yellow Octopus Studio and you should definitely go check it out ;).

Anyways, many bloggers use their creative skills to create products and sell them to their audience. Here are just a few products that bloggers can make and sell:

  • Courses – If you have a special skill and want to teach others how to do something, you can design your own courses using Teachable or Udemy and sell them on there.
  • Ebooks – Similar to a course, if you have knowledge about something that can help others, selling an Ebook is a great way to go.
  • Planners – Like this one on my Etsy shop 😉
  • Merchandise – Like tee-shirts, stickers, greeting cards, tote bags, or mugs. Etsy is a good place to sell things like this too.
  • Services – For example, some travel bloggers also work as travel agents and can book trips for you. Some nutritionist bloggers sell nutrition coaching. Finance bloggers can sell budgeting sessions to help you save money. The options are endless!

It’s important to keep in mind that selling merchandise is more time consuming than selling digital products. This is because you need to order in all of your supplies and ship things on time. With digital products, you just need to create them once and then you can sell them forever! Selling digital products that you just set up once and then keep selling is called passive income. This is because you can passively earn money even while sleeping!

How to Start Your Own Etsy Shop

Yellow Octopus Studio Etsy Shop / How to Start an Etsy Shop
Oh, look! It’s my Etsy shop!

I have owned three or four different Etsy shops in the past but I never started taking Etsy seriously until I created Yellow Octopus Studio. What I love about Etsy is that you can sell almost anything that is either handmade or vintage. Plus the Etsy marketplace is already full of buyers! When people go to Etsy, it’s because they’re ready to shop. In my Etsy Shop, I currently sell digital products such as digital planners, clip art, Procreate brushes, and even fonts. These are great because I only had to create them once and I don’t have to ship anything. I LOVE passive income! I’m also planning to start selling eco-friendly stickers, art prints, and greeting cards once I move back to Canada (I live in Mexico currently).

If you’re crafty or know how to make digital products well, you can easily start selling on Etsy. Make sure to check that the Etsy shop name you want to use isn’t already taken first. Then calculate how much it’ll cost you to get your inventory, make your products, and ship them. Price your products accordingly, register your business (there are different laws around this depending on your country), and start selling! Now, Etsy isn’t a remote job that you can take anywhere if you’re selling physical products. But if you sell digital products you can sell from anywhere! Just remember that if you want to go on a vacation when selling physical products, to put your Etsy shop on ‘Vacation Mode’.
